The challenge of solid waste management in Port-au-Prince

Waste management has always been a challenge for all countries, and each one is developing its own waste collection and treatment system. In Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, waste management is largely informal, with people depositing their garbage by roadsides, rivers and other open spaces. This practice is due to the urbanization problem facing Port-au-Prince and the surrounding communes.

There was a time when waste collection was regulated in Port-au-Prince, and the first law on waste management and disposal was passed in March 1981, when door-to-door collection was the norm.

This study will address the problem of the existing solid waste management system in Port-a-Prince, affected by economic, institutional, legislative, technical and operational constraints.
