Threat of Cryptosporidium contamination of Haiti's water reserves

Cryptosporidiosis is a disease caused by contamination with cryptosporidium oocysts, and is the most frequent source of diarrhoea in Haiti. Data collected from December 2000 to June 2002 at 37 sites show that in the Port-au-Prince district, at least 65% of all water samples collected were contaminated with cryptosporidium oocysts, i.e. a total of 24 out of 37 sites.

This study analyzes the circulation of cryptosporidium oocysts in surface water and public water networks in the Port-au-Prince district.
