CRYPTOSPORIDIUM AND GIARDIA OOCYST CONTAMINATION OF SURFACE AND GROUNDWATER IN THE CAYES.
Giardia cysts and cryptosporidium oocysts are the two parasites analyzed in this study in the town of Les Cayes. Samples were taken at 15 sites in September, November and December 2007, i.e. at the end of the main rainy season and the beginning of the dry season. Of the 15 sites, 8 were contaminated, 6 showed contamination of 5 to 100 oocysts per 100 l of water sampled, and 4 Giardia-contaminated sites showed contamination of 5 to 960 cysts per 100 l sampled.
Results were obtained using the method based on filtration, elution and concentration of oocysts and cysts by immunomagnetic separation, which is considered an effective tool for detecting and identifying oocysts and cysts.
